Tsukiji Fish Market - by Sandra

Since we weren't able to blog every single day -- after all, who wants to feel forced to write after a full day of sightseeing and eating during a honeymoon -- now that we're getting back to reality, I wanted to highlight the moments that were particularly memorable. And include some pictures, as well!

Day 3: Tsukiji fish market was definitely one of the best parts of the trip, despite the 4:30 am wakeup call. After nearly getting run over several times by the motorized carts that zoomed around from all directions, it was amazing to see the rows upon rows of frozen whole tuna sitting in the middle of a warehouse building floor waiting to be inspected by the buyers, who poked at the fish with what seemed to be long-handled sickles. To think that most of the world's finest sushi restaurants get their fish from this one location was just mind blowing. And the omakase sushi meal that followed was amazing as well. Unless I come back, there will likely never be a time again in the future where I stand outside in the cold for 45 minutes to wait to get a seat at a sushi bar for a fresh-off-the-docks sushi breakfast at 7 in the morning. But boy, was it worth it. One of the pieces of mollusk we were served was still moving when we ate it! But more surprising than that was this piece of sushi, which our chef served us when Ivan asked him to give us something of his own choice:

Eeeeeee! Warm, creamy, and not particularly enjoyable, especially since I found out what it was before I ate it. Mental block? Probably. I know it's considered a delicacy, but I couldn't help but feel a little like throwing up after eating it. Still, I told the chef, "Oishii!"
